Dear Future Hobartians,
Welcome to Hobart, otherwise known as the Women’s Residential College! Hobart has a long tradition as a space where women from many different backgrounds and with many different academic interests have flourished at Northwestern. I know this partly first-hand, because I’ve been affiliated with Hobart, either as a fellow or as a member of the Chair staff, for over 10 years.
Hobart is a small Residential College, ideal for developing a strong sense of community. As a graduate of a women’s college myself, I’m committed to helping you all create that community. Like the other chair staff, Associate Chair Diamond Jones and Assistant Chair Kyla Knauf, I don’t live at Hobart, but like them I participate in the ongoing life of the College in different ways, from weekly student exec board meetings to regular fellows’ lunches to various other events over the course of the year.
Hobart’s student executive board members have introduced themselves in another part of this welcome letter and when you arrive in September, they’ll likely already have moved back in and be ready to help you get settled. They’ll also be programming events and activities throughout the academic year for you to take part in. Because Hobart is part of the Residential College system, you’ll also have an opportunity this year to participate in cross-college events/excursions. Past examples of these trips include visits to the Shedd Aquarium, performances at the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre and Second City, and a bike tour of Chicago.
One of the great benefits of being part of a Residential College is that you’re automatically connected to an affiliated group of faculty fellows from across the university. At Hobart we have many fellows who return for more than one year, and we currently have a few who have been with Hobart for over twenty years! That speaks not only to their commitment but to the enjoyment they get from talking with all of you and being part of the Hobart community. A regular part of that happens at the fellows’ lunches in the Hobart dining room, where you can talk about your classes (and theirs!) or anything that is on your mind. It’s casual, but it’s a great opportunity to learn and share perspectives.
College is an exciting time, full of opportunity, and it’s also a bit of an adjustment. About half of your fellow Hobartians will be sophomores, juniors and seniors, and they’re going to be a great resource for you, ready to share what they’ve learned about managing their time and seeking out opportunities at Northwestern. They are a welcoming, supportive, and dedicated group.
Have a great rest of the summer, and we’ll see you in September!

Hello new Hobartians,
It’s wonderful to meet you! We’re so excited to welcome you to our community in the fall. This letter will introduce you to some key points about your future home away from home.
If you’re curious about the rooms, we’re delighted to say that Hobart is quite cozy and was renovated relatively recently (okay, 2005, but it’s still really nice!). Every room has an AC/heating unit that you can set to your preferred temperature, so you’ll be comfortable all year round. Our common spaces are also lovely - we have two TV lounges, two kitchens, an exercise room, a computer lab with free printing, a library, a ping pong table, and a piano. There’s pretty much always a puzzle to work on in the lounge as well.
While the rooms are pretty nice, the best thing about Hobart is definitely the community! Hobartians come from a diverse mix of backgrounds, majors, faiths, and identities, but are always really supportive and kind. Regardless of if someone’s your best friend or a casual acquaintance, there’s always a friendly face here. The amazing thing about living in a residential college is that it’s not just about connecting with your fellow students, but also with faculty fellows. These professors are amazing to know inside and outside of the classroom, with each professor bringing a fantastic enthusiasm for their work and uplifting Hobartians. Chatting with professors outside the dynamic of a classroom also helps you feel more connected to the whole Northwestern community, not just your fellow undergraduates.
Connecting with the Hobart community often takes place at our social events! Weekly traditions like Munchies and Fellows’ Lunches bring Hobartians together over snacks, while rotating social events have included everything from self care nights to puzzles to shrinky dink making. Firesides are essentially Hobart Ted Talks, allowing you to present about any subject you care about! Previous firesides have included analyses of the musical Falsettos, the history of the Spice Girls, our Assistant Chair Kyla's presentation on hiking & trails in the area, and more. At the end of every quarter we have Appreciation Week, a celebration of a theme in TV/movies such as Twilight, Spiderman, or Studio Ghibli. Other traditions include pumpkin carving in the fall and a spring Hobart formal where we dress up and eat good food!
Hobart isn’t the only residential college at Northwestern - as one of ten, we’re all connected by the residential college board, or RCB for short. RCB hosts events such as Jeopardy, Field Day, and a formal dance throughout the year to share the res college spirit! There are also fun cross-res college events such as firesides and mixers.
Overall, we appreciate you reading all of this and are so excited for you to start experiencing it in the fall! If you ever have any questions, please feel free to email [email protected] or reach out to anyone on exec (find more about us here). We’re all here for you and happy to help!
With love,
Hobart House Exec
